Mangosteen, "Queen of the Fruits" is widely cultivated throughout the Malay and Java peninsulas, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand. Astringent substances in the fruit peel can be used to cure diarrhea.

Mangosteen is a natural organic compound isolated from various parts of the mangosteen tree (Garcinia mangostana). It is a yellow crystalline solid with a xanthone core structure. Mangostin and a variety of other xanthones from mangosteen have been investigated for biological properties including antioxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities.

In cosmetics, it is an effective treatment for infected acne. There is evidence that it helps protect against free radicals that cause wrinkles on the skin.
